Master’s Program

In line with Doshisha University’s goal of education of Conscience, and based on the philosophy of developing composite interdisciplinary fields and creating and developing novel academic fields, the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science analyzes various cultural phenomena as an expression of human spiritual and intellectual activities from new perspectives and engages in interdisciplinary education and research activities that organically combine the humanities and sciences with the aim of developing new academic fields required by the times, and fostering professionals who possess broad cross-disciplinary expertise, rich academic knowledge, international character, and creativity.

Students sought by the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science Master’s Program

The following students, who share the philosophy of the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science, are encouraged to apply for the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science Master’s Program.

  1. Students who possess a strong interest and desire to elucidate various cultural phenomena surrounding humans.
  2. Students who desire to create new knowledge based on broad perspectives and unrestricted by existing academic disciplines.
  3. Students who have acquired expertise in a target cultural domain and learned basic research methods to explore it scientifically.
Skills and Abilities Students are expected to acquire before entering the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science Master’s Program

In order to realize the personnel development goals of the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science, prospective students must have obtained the following in advance of entry to the Master’s Program:

  1. A broad perspective that is not limited to existing academic disciplines.
  2. Basic knowledge of the cultural domain of cultural resources studies, linguistic data science, and behavioral data science.
  3. The basic ability to scientifically explore a wide variety of phenomena.

Doctoral Program

The following students, who share the philosophy of the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science, are encouraged to apply for the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science Doctoral Program:

  1. Students who have a strong interest and desire to elucidate various human cultural phenomena.
  2. Students who aim to uncover new knowledge based on a broad perspective unrestricted by existing academic disciplines.
  3. Students who have acquired in-depth expertise in a target academic field and have learned methods to explore it scientifically with the use of developmental research.
Prerequisite skills and abilities for entering the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science Doctoral Program

In order to realize the personnel development goals of the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science, prospective students must have obtained the following in advance of entry to the Doctoral Program:

  1. The capabilities to create new knowledge based on a broad perspective unrestricted by existing academic disciplines.
  2. In-depth expertise in the cultural domains of cultural resources studies, linguistic data science, and behavioral data science, or in the data science domains of statistical science, mathematical science, information science, etc.
  3. A strong desire to develop new research methods for the scientific exploration of various phenomena.

Master’s Program

Knowledge and Skills
  • Students will become able to make scientific inquiries based on advanced knowledge of data science and in-depth expertise in the target cultural domain. Students will acquire expertise in the target cultural domain and basic research methods to scientifically explore it.
Critical Thinking, Judgment, and Expression
  • Students will become capable of organically combining knowledge from different academic disciplines to construct new methodologies of cultural understanding. Students will become able to make scientific inquiries into complex and ambiguous cultural and human-related phenomena and apply the results to discovering and solving issues.
Independence, Diversity, and Cooperation
  • Students will possess a broad perspective that enables them to think flexibly as well as agile conceptual capabilities to respond precisely to the diverse and complex issues that arise within society.

Doctoral Program

Knowledge and Skills
  • Students will become able to make scientific inquiries based on the latest findings in data science and in-depth expertise in the target cultural domain and its surrounding domains. Students will become able to challenge unexplored subject areas and develop research methods related to culture and humans, and to create new academic fields of study.
Critical Thinking, Judgment, and Expression
  • Students will become able to independently plan and implement research design, as well as to acquire in-depth expertise in the target cultural domain and develop research methods for its scientific exploration.
Independence, Diversity, and Cooperation
  • Students will become able to analyze various cultural phenomena from diverse perspectives, to play an active role in the international community.By developing new research methods related to culture, and pioneering new academic fields of study.

Curriculum Policy

Master’s Program

The following curriculum is designed to prepare students with the qualities and abilities described in the Diploma Policy.

Organization and Administration Policy
  • In order to foster individuals capable of conducting scientific inquiry based on advanced knowledge of data science and in-depth expertise in the target cultural domain, the curriculum consists of several elements:  specialized subjects, common subjects, research guidance subjects, symposium subjects, theses, and Advanced Social Researcher certification subjects. Lectures are presented in each of four courses: Cultural Resources Studies, Linguistic Data Science, Behavioral Data Science, and Fundamental Data Science.
Knowledge and Skills
  • In lecture subjects, students take a minimum of 12 credits from specialized subjects in their course, the goal of which is to acquire advanced knowledge in data science and in-depth expertise in their courses, which will form the basis for interdisciplinary research skills.
  • In research guidance subjects, students take four credits of the compulsory subject Research and Experiments in Culture and Information Science from their first through second year, with the goal of attainment being to acquire expertise in the target cultural domain and basic research methods for scientific inquiry based on the knowledge acquired in the lecture subjects.
  • In common subjects, students acquire the latest knowledge and skills related to the ever-changing field of culture and information science, and develop the English language skills necessary for culture and information science research.
  • In Advanced Social Researcher certification subjects, students acquire advanced research methods related to social research.
Critical Thinking, Judgment, and Expression
  • Based on research conducted in the research guidance subjects, a thesis is required. It should exemplify scientific inquiry into complex and ambiguous cultural and human-related phenomena, apply the results to further discovery and resolution of issues, and publish new findings.
Independence, Diversity, and Cooperation
  • Students take four credits in the symposium subjects as compulsory subjects in their first and second years with the goal of acquiring presentation techniques through research presentations as well as clearly understanding the direction and positioning of their own research.

Doctoral Program

The following curriculum is designed to prepare students with the qualities and abilities described in the Diploma Policy.

Organization and Administration Policy
  • In order to foster individuals capable of conducting scientific inquiry based on advanced knowledge of data science and in-depth expertise in the target cultural domain am dots surrounding areas, the curriculum consists of several elements:  specialized subjects, common subjects, research guidance subjects, symposium subjects, and theses. Lectures are presented in the Cultural Resources Studies, Linguistic Data Science, Behavioral Data Science, and Fundamental Data Science courses.
Knowledge and Skills
  • In lecture subjects, students select a minimum of 10 credits from specialized and common subjects with the goal of attaining the latest knowledge in data science, which is the basis for developing new academic fields and provides in-depth expertise in the target cultural domain and surrounding areas.
  • In research guidance subjects, students take six credits of Special Studies in Culture and Information Science, with the goal of independently planning and conducting research using unexplored subjects or research methods based on the knowledge acquired in lecture subjects.
  • In common subjects, students acquire the latest advanced knowledge and skills related to the ever-changing field of culture and information science.
Critical Thinking, Judgment, and Expression
  • A thesis is required, with the goal of independently planning and implementing a research design, developing a deep expertise of the target cultural area and a developmental research methodology to scientifically explore it, and publishing the new findings obtained therefrom.
Independence, Diversity, and Cooperation
  • In the symposium subjects, students take four credits in their first and second years, with the goal of improving presentation techniques through research presentations as well as clearly understanding the direction and positioning of their own research.
