Learn through integration of humanities and
sciences beyond the areas

By viewing the entire human behaviors ranging from arts to social actions such as economic activities as "culture", gathering and analyzing data based on the adequate theory, we will explore the "culture" which was not a subject of natural science, through a method of "data science".

Cultural resources

Cultural resources are referred to as materials such as literature and artifacts of each era and community to explore the culture of human society. We will approach the essence of culture by exhaustively gathering data of actual documents, digitalizing such information and analyzing them based on a mathematical method regarding cultural resources which are conventionally used in the study of art history, culturology, philology, literature, anthropology and historical archeology.

Linguistics

Linguistics is an indispensable area of study to clarify the essence of humans, cultures, and societies around us. We are able to conduct a wide range of research in accordance with our interests, such as descriptive research where we observe linguistics data to make a generalization, theoretical and experimental research where we attempt to explain linguistic competence and performance in our brain, and corpus research where we statistically analyze massive linguistic data to capture various properties of languages.

Behaviors

Various human actions are collectively referred to as “behaviors” ranging from greetings to daily signs such as gestures to performance such as dance and plays. By observing human behaviors from the perspective of individuals, organizations and society, we can shed light on the underlying culture in behaviors.

Statistical science

Statistical science is the method to gain insights by analyzing data, which is used in many other areas. Due to the recent development of measuring technique, the data used has become complicated and enormous. The development of statistical science as the analyzation method is significant and the extent where such method is applied has expanded. In this Faculty, as a method to analyze cultural phenomena, we use various methods of statistical science. In addition to the basic methods such as descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, various methods are used including Bayesian statistics, multivariate analysis, time series analysis and machine learning.

Mathematical science

In the area of mathematical science centered on mathematics, we will gain new insights by taking things logically and making full use of deductive way of thinking. Mathematics are the basis of all types of science and have contributed to the development throughout the history of mankind. In this Faculty, we use the knowledge of various mathematical science to analyze cultural phenomena. We will analyze the cultural data through the use of mathematical knowledge such as probabilistic logic, statistical mathematics, differential equation, optimization approach and mathematical model, based on linear algebras and calculus, in addition to logic and discrete mathematics.

Information science

Information science which aims to bring meanings and orders to the world and to create social values through information is a study where we explore principles and techniques concerning generation, exploration, expression, accumulation, management, recognition, analysis, transformation and communication of information. The data analysis of cultural phenomena used in this Faculty is based on the analytical processing of data accumulated or gathered. The fundamental knowledge includes data structure, algorithm, programming and database.

We will be able to recognize that there are diversified approaches in research to one cultural phenomenon both from humanities and sciences and to cultivate a flexible mindset to an issue by learning a wide range of academic disciplines related to culture and data science.

Sensibility based on a wide variety of insights about culture

We will be able to develop sensibility which helps us to adequately determine the value and potentiality of various phenomena by gaining a wide range of insights about culture, taking into consideration cultural and social backgrounds.

Data analytical abilities and logical thinking power

We will be able to develop both data analytical abilities and logical thinking power by analyzing data gained from experiments and research and by reasonably thinking about valuable insights in a Joint Research and Graduation Study.
