What is the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science?

In today’s world, it is an issue of great importance how people with different cultural and historical backgrounds and values can live together harmoniously. For that purpose, a deep understanding of cultural phenomena in various regions as well as a keen insight into human beings is necessary. At the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science, we will explore a new research area required by today’s society through analyzing cultural phenomena as expressions of human spiritual and intellectual activities, and implementing high-level interdisciplinary education and research which combine the academic fields of the humanities and science.

Culture and Information Science will create a new intellect.

With the development and advancement of learning, academic fields have become highly specialized. However, the segmentation of research fields has the potential problem of a lack of multifaceted and comprehensive perspectives. In recent years, the need for a comprehensive research integrating knowledge of different fields has started to be recognized. At Doshisha University, in April, 2005, the Faculty of Culture and Information Science was established in order to respond to these present day demands.
Culture and Information Science-A new academic field that attempts to analyze and clarify diverse kinds of cultural and social phenomena using research methods and analytic devices for natural science. The main education and research targets are various kinds of cultural and social phenomena, including literature, archeology, linguistics, arts, music and traditional art performances.
In order to conduct advanced research activities by further deepening this research area, we have established the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science.

Nurturing individuals with flexible thinking skills who can play an active role in diverse fields

The Graduate School of Culture and Information Science aims to nurture and develop international researchers with a broad perspective and flexible mind-set who can develop innovative research methods regarding culture and explore new academic fields, as well as professionals with high abilities who can respond accurately to the problems arising in society.
On completion of the degree, students will have a wide range of career options including museum related fields (art museums, archeology centers), mass media (publishing companies, newspaper companies, TV stations, fine arts and performing arts productions), planning and research fields (think-tanks, consulting companies, divisions of research, marketing, information analysis, or public relations in various industries), education (teaching, curriculum development), and government related fields (civil service).
